Parks & Rec had plenty of problems, but tonally it was NBC’s sweet to The Office’s sour. Poehler is, in some ways, one of the entertainment industry’s more positive forces, at least superficially. (Oh, and as the voice of Joy in Pixar’s Inside Out, of course.) She voices both Duncan and mom Kimberly here, and I’d like to believe that she infuses the show with a little bit of her heart, too. TAKE THE NEXT EXITĭuncanville is propelled, both artistically and audibly, by comedian Amy Poehler, best known for her roles on Saturday Night Live and in NBC’s Parks & Recreation. Perhaps, with enough of those bits bouncing around in his noggin, Duncan’s mind may catch up with his body, and he’ll become a fine, upstanding young man. (The fact that she says she’s in love with Duncan and wants to marry him once they both get older … well, that’s a separate issue.)Īnd maybe every once in a while, his parents have a good bit of wisdom to pass on. Sometimes it means babysitting Jing, his adopted younger sis, even if she seriously impedes his social life. Sometimes that means forgiving 12-year-old sister Kimberly, even though she never deserves it. So he does what he can to keep peace in the family and even, at times, make Mom and Dad happy. No, Duncan’s the only one stuck with parents who, y’know, care. And Yangzi … well, as the clique’s resident social media influencer, rules don’t really pertain to him. Bex lives with her grandma, and she’s prone to forget what decade it is. Wolf’s parents tend to get drunk and pass out before they can do any real parenting. It’s not as if Duncan’s friends have these sorts of problems. “What was I supposed to do? Respect your boundaries?” TEENAGE WASTELAND “But it was something I wanted, and you said no!” Duncan says after stealing the car to go to an electronic music fest. Why can’t they give him some space? See how mature he is and let him, I dunno, stay out all night or climb a cliff or see if he can find some premarital sex somewhere? Why do Mom and Dad-especially Mom-always have to lay down the law? He loves his parents, but man, are they annoying, what with all their rules and guidelines and curfews. Take Duncan, a fellow with perpetual bedhead and a personality that makes light-speed jumps between surly and sweet. Again, this isn’t necessarily bad, but when it’s a finale, and a show is supposed to focus on its central family, it’s a little - sucky.Few things go together like bad decisions and being 15. Unfortunately, although this episode is enjoyable, the Guy Fieri parts are the funniest part for me. But hey, who am I to judge? I say as I glance around to make sure he isn’t near before I lock my doors. Nothing will haunt me quite like the image of cartoon Guy Fieri slurping up a CVS receipt from a dumpster. The idea that Jing and Kimberly sit together in Kimberly’s bed and watch Downton Abbey together is so adorable, and I wish we could see that scene play out. Jing and Kimberly are fantastic on “Moneyballs,” with their reactions, timing, and horrible accents. I understand why the storylines are sometimes split up, but it is much better when the family works together, with different intricacies in one overall storyline. I always enjoy watching families working together and navigating the same storyline instead of being separated. Generational trauma is not something that comes up all the time, so the fact that Duncanville plays into the tropes instead of against them is a bit disappointing. Jack tries to win his father’s approval during the season finale, and he does eventually get it, but I think it would be a better lesson if he never got it and Jack learned how to be a good father without his father’s approval. Annie convinces everyone it’s alright (it’s not alright.) Which is, you know, not normal for a family, but that’s ok. “Moneyballs” comes with Jack learning that just because you’re stiff and kind of mean doesn’t mean you’re a good dad.Įspecially when it turns around and Duncan is the one telling Jack what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. On Duncanville Season 3 Episode 10, “Moneyballs,” Duncan and Jack’s roles are reversed, and Downton Abbey rubs off on Jing and Kimberly a little too much.Īlso, Jack’s dad is there.
